...have a Green Halloween by using these simple tips..

Halloween can be a very frightening time of year! Not just because of the witches and ghosts but because of the ‘waste mountain’ that we create. Halloween parties and festivities generate a scary amount of waste ranging from pumpkins and sweet wrappers to discarded costumes and decorations!

Every year, 1 million pumpkins are sold and 99% of these are used to carve into scary lanterns. The seeds, pulp and skin from most of these pumpkins end up in the bin being completely wasted!

Top spooky tips!

If your children decide to get into the Halloween spirit by dressing up as a spooky creature, don’t waste money on buying a new costume every year that will end up in the bin - try making your own (it’s much more fun!).

Scooped out pumpkin seeds can be roasted to make a delicious, nutritious snack and the flesh can be used to make delicious soup, pies or bread. There are loads of fantastic recipes so why not give them a go!

Alternatively, why not turn your pumpkin into compost! The seeds and flesh can be added directly to your compost bin, followed by the lantern (broken into pieces) after Halloween.  You could even try growing your own pumpkins next year using the compost you make!
